PROJECT BACKGROUND
EECO2 partnered with a global pharmaceutical company site in Italy that specialises in the production of plasma-derived therapies. The site is part of the supply chain in the fractionation and purification of donated human plasma, extracting vital proteins such as albumin, immunoglobulins, and coagulation factors. This site team requested expert advice to develop a credible net zero carbon plan, including detailed steps to successfully execute in line with the corporate objectives for decarbonisation.
– Evaluated site processes and quantified utility consumption per process
– Reviewed deployable low/zero carbon technologies, including:
– Alternative heat sources – high-temp heat pumps for ethanol distillation columns, solar thermal,
– electric steam
– Liquid CO₂ natural circulation loop for efficient cooling at -15°C & -25°C
– Conducted a comprehensive energy audit to support NZC goals and immediate cost savings, covering:
– HVAC and controls optimisation (GMP/classified and non-GMP areas)
– Wastewater treatment efficiency
– Cooling tower and WFI generation optimisation (with water savings)
– Chilled water system optimisations
– Heat recovery from dehumidifiers and other heat sources
-Identified three cost-effective Net Zero Carbon pathways with recommended actions
Created a clear multi-year action plan with identified investments and timings
Advised the site team on technology-driven solutions and implementation
Focused on no-regret, short-term actions aligned with long-term goals and immediate savings
Establish a cross-functional project management team
Conduct feasibility studies and secure capital approvals
Implement projects and track ROI
Align with long-term sustainability and decarbonisation goals
