Build Back Better

HELPING BIG PHARMA BUILD BACK BETTER

Posted on

What we do next can change everything. As the world recovers, we have the chance to reset our priorities and build back better than before.

The COVID-19 pandemic is the biggest global health emergency of our time, affecting people’s livelihoods and much of the world’s economies. When lock-downs and restrictions start to relax, attention should be turned to the #BuildBackBetter campaign.

Previously used by other organisations including The World Health Organization in 2013, referring to opportunities of reform in the aftermath of nationwide emergencies1, the campaign name has resurfaced in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The keynote address by Alok Sharma, Business Secretary and COP26 President, at the Let’s Build Back Better event on 3rd August 2020 highlighted the importance of continuing to tackle climate change;

“Today, governments and businesses are, rightly, focussing on their response to the coronavirus pandemic. But the climate crisis remains as acute as ever.”

Sharma stated that this is a critical moment in the fight against climate change and that it is ‘imperative that we work together, in the aftermath of the coronavirus, and ahead of COP26, to build back better’2.

The Build Back Better campaign is not focused on helping industries return to normal, but to use this as an opportunity to improve the norm and become better than before. An industry that would greatly benefit from this campaign to improve sustainability is the pharmaceutical industry. With the journey back to normality, plans need to be in place to ensure that employees have clean and safe working environments to return to, with the aim of significantly reducing their risk of contracting COVID-19.

One way to incorporate required changes and return better than before, is for companies to invest more seriously in their sustainability plans with the mindset of pairing recovery action with climate action. This will allow the pharmaceutical industry to emerge stronger than before, whilst protecting the environment and improving global sustainability.

In the short term and as buildings and sites start to reopen, the focus must be on keeping the workforce safe. In July, The World Health Organisation stated that there is a growing body of evidence that the SARS-CoV-2 virus (which is the cause of COVID-19) can be spread through the air, particularly in poorly ventilated indoor spaces3; therefore ventilation provision, assessment and maintenance should be top of the list.

A heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) assessment should be completed in all areas of each site, to ensure that they are compliant and running initial system modifications are undertaken to protect people and limit the spread of SARS-CoV-2 within HVAC systems. These modifications will most likely increase energy consumption and carbon emissions, therefore post pandemic it will be important to achieve a more sustainable long-term fix. Perhaps obvious, but also essential that all personnel follow government and company guidelines on surface cleaning, personal hygiene, physical distancing & separation measures.

All large businesses have an ethical and legal requirement to monitor and reduce energy usage, carbon footprint and levels of greenhouse gas emissions, with public oversight via the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP)4 and others. Inevitably, energy and water usage and climate change appear high up the risk materiality rankings of most large companies. As we start to emerge post-lockdown, new strategies and targets at corporate levels should be in place to reduce climate change or existing targets be brought forward. Earlier this year AstraZeneca brought forward their decarbonation plans by more than a decade and now have an ‘Ambition Carbon Zero’ program, committing zero carbon emissions from operations across the globe by 20255. AstraZeneca’s plans should be the blueprint that other companies across the pharmaceutical industry should be striving to achieve.

For large companies to meet and potentially exceed energy reduction targets, global multi-site strategies should be in place to accurately measure and report the results. This involves identifying and implementing energy, water, and greenhouse gas reduction opportunities at each site. Analysing entire site energy consumptions, identifying problem areas, and implementing energy efficiency projects will provide emission and cost reductions. Once potential projects have been selected from an initial energy assessment, water assessment or Energy Savings Opportunity Survey (ESOS), a study that develops the detailed solution should be carried out. This feasibility study should include concept designs, risk assessments and detailed costs and savings to enable you to fund and implement projects. HVAC systems within regulated environments is typically responsible for consuming up to 70% of a site’s total energy, and it therefore tends to also represent the largest opportunity for improvement.

To build back better, innovation and new technologies should emerge and shift the overall industry. A great place to start is reviewing sustainability and energy efficiency of cleanrooms. A review of cleanroom costs in Europe indicated that energy consumption accounts for 65-75% of the annual cost of running a cleanroom, with HVAC systems accounting for the majority of this6. In most cases, particle generation rates are low and air flow rates are set much higher than required. The standard industry model for both existing and new cleanroom construction has not changed for over 50 years, and a new innovative technology that allows for adaptive, demand-based control of the cleanroom’s HVAC system is the future and the key to a more sustainable cleanroom. The ICCS® (Intelligent Cleanroom Control System) regulates and controls based on the particle concentration within the cleanroom, not just on the air change rate, allowing for a reduction in air flow when not required. It is an overdue technological leap forward for cleanroom design and operation offering continuous monitoring of cleanroom performance, whilst assuring product quality, improving compliance and sustainability, and achieving significant energy savings. With this technology EECO2 has demonstrated energy savings of up to 60% on traditional control systems 7.

With the availability of improved knowledge, advanced technology, and an opportunity to change the norm; Now is the time to act and build back better.

NO TRAVEL? NO PROBLEM: EECO2’S REMOTE WORKING CAPABILITIES

Posted on

With air travel to and from the UK looking likely to be limited for some time to come, we wanted to take this opportunity to remind existing and prospective clients that much of our work can be carried out remotely without the need for travelling to sites or physical meetings.

The EECO2 team is already well equipped for remote working including video conferencing and secure file transfer and the following key elements of our service can be facilitated remotely/virtually – don’t hesitate to get in touch for more information or to request a demonstration.

Remote site energy surveys

A site energy survey is usually the start point from which EECO2 can identify further opportunities for detailed project development and feasibility.

Using the latest 3D mapping and visualisation technology, we are now able to carry out site energy surveys remotely, creating accurate interactive 3D models of facilities to enable detailed energy surveys and analysis.

The resulting high quality record of site systems has a host of practical uses beyond the project and usually represents a cost saving on traditional methods.

Facility design reviews (including HVAC and Cleanroom design)

EECO2 can provide detailed evaluation of the energy efficiency performance of capital projects throughout the design process to ensure that new facilities and refurbishment projects operate optimally and in compliance with relevant directives.

We have developed a portfolio of design guides and energy efficiency standards for several clients who use these within their capital project teams and also to educate project engineering design and delivery contractors.

Because of our expertise in cGMP and pharmaceutical manufacturing, we know what works and what does not, and can challenge our clients to be better, whilst never compromising product quality or safety.

MEMU

EECO2’s MEMU (Mobile Energy Monitoring Unit) allows for the remote monitoring of energy consumption in addition to the status of filters in HVAC systems. Energy and maintenance managers are therefore able to identify exactly where and how much energy is being consumed in their facilities as well as being able to monitor filter integrity, reducing the need for physical interventions.

The MEMU® is simple to install utilising wireless communication between sensors and can be tailored to meet a client’s specific requirements. It can be used to prove energy savings before and after a project. Data is transmitted via GSM technology to a bureau hosted by EECO2. This allows clients to view dashboards and access monthly reports.

GLOBAL CASE STUDY

NEW CASE STUDY – MULTI-SITE GLOBAL ENERGY REDUCTION PROGRAMME

Posted on

Our latest case study is based on a global pharmaceutical energy reduction programme. After a successful trial in Sydney, Australia, our client went on to introduce a corporate carbon and energy reduction programme globally. EECO2 worked with a further 10 of the client’s key sites, in the United States (6 sites), China (2 sites), Japan, UK and Australia.

Method: The EECO2 team conducted the on-site energy and water reduction assessment workshop events, working together with the site engineering teams and other stakeholders. The scope included a review of opportunities in HVAC systems serving all areas, utility generation & distribution (steam, chilled water, cooling water, compressed air systems) and water systems.

Results: EECO2 recommended that the client’s focus should be on rapidly implementing HVAC & BMS optimisation opportunities as these have high cost reduction, short paybacks and excellent emissions reductions. As an example, since the event took place, one site implemented optimisation of controls on several HVAC systems, which delivered $190k annual savings with a simple payback of 6 months. As well as the larger energy projects, the events identified 143 ‘Just Do Its’, which are low or no cost actions that site teams can action immediately. As well as the results below, the annual water savings identified was 47 Million Gallons, which is a 22% reduction! Projects have an average simple payback period of 3 years.

MEMU INSTALLED IN IRELAND

Posted on

Another MEMU has been installed in a client site in Ireland. The equipment has been shipped to the pharmaceutical manufacturing site and installed, to prove energy savings of some new energy efficient filters. The MEMU will be installed before the project begins, as to record the ‘before’ energy consumption rates. The new filters will then be fitted in the AHUs, aiming to reduce energy consumption of the site. After the instillation has taken place, the MEMU will then record the granular results of energy consumption and will compare the results; proving to the client (and the filter manufacturer) just how effective the project has been, how much energy, carbon and cost they will save and how energy efficient the new filters actually are.

For more information on the MEMU, click here.

Follow EECO2 on LinkedIn for more MEMU news.

The MEMU® is an independent metering, monitoring and targeting system (MM&T). It is simple to install utilising wireless communication between sensors and can be tailored to meet a client’s specific requirements. It can be used to prove energy savings before and after a project. Data is transmitted via GSM technology to a bureau hosted by EECO2. This allows you to view dashboards and access monthly reports.

EECO2 – A GLOBAL TEAM

Posted on

As a global organisation with clients all over the world, there are times when the EECO2 team is spread right across the globe. Supporting customers from one continent to the next; separated by oceans, but maintaining the high level of customer service and great quality engineered projects across-the-board.

This week, the EECO2 team is in Ireland, performing an energy and water event; developing energy and water saving projects for a top 10 global pharma client. Meanwhile, another project team is in Croatia performing a HVAC assessment on a client site. Then there are those working in the UK, visiting customers not too far from our head office in Cheshire…

Last week, Keith Beattie (Director, EECO2) was in the USA speaking at an ISPE event (see more about that here), while the engineering team were in Spain performing an energy assessment. The client site that was established around 1975 and concentrates on tablet manufacturing, showed lots of examples of good practice and had a great and accommodating site team, which really helped the EECO2 team coordinate a successful event.

When the EECO2 team is travelling, further emphasis is placed on communication to maintain strong connections between the team. This ensures that nothing is missed, projects are controlled and managed smoothly and the close relationship within the organisation remains as strong as ever.

If you have a project you would like to talk to EECO2 about, contact us today. Or follow us on LinkedIn and Twitter to see where we go next.

ITALY – HVAC ENERGY ASSESSMENT

Posted on

Last week, the EECO2 team was in beautiful Italy for an on-site HVAC Energy Assessment. The 4 day assessment took place at the pharmaceutical manufacturing site a couple of hours from the capital. The visit was incredibly successful and the team is now preparing the report for the client.

What is involved in an energy assessment?

The EECO2 team analyses site energy consumption, identifying problem areas and energy efficiency projects that will be able to provide emission and cost reduction. They then produce a report with a list of recommended energy efficiency projects and predicted savings for each. Working together with the site team, the EECO2 team works to implement the agreed projects, to improve the energy efficiency of the site and reduce consumption and cost.

To see where else we have been, check the Case Studies page or contact EECO2 to arrange an energy assessment on your site.
